MoNS
A Compound Fertilizer Formulated Specifically for Moss Cultivation
Enhance growth. Increase biomass density. Reduce maintenance cycles.
MoNS (Moss Nutrient Fertilizer) is an inorganic compound fertilizer formulated specifically for moss cultivation. Unlike regular fertilizers designed for root-fed plants, MoNS is developed around the foliar absorption physiology of moss — a plant that absorbs water and nutrients entirely through its stems and leaves. With an NPK ratio of 9-10-28 and a proprietary blend of micronutrients, MoNS delivers nutrients in forms and ratios that support moss growth in industrial cultivation.
In controlled 30-day laboratory trials, moss cultivated with MoNS showed approximately 30% faster growth rates compared to moss grown with rainwater.
MoNS is manufactured by Code of Nature, a biotechnology company established in South Korea in 2021.
Why Regular Fertilizers Fail for Moss — And What MoNS Does Differently

※ Images shown are for illustrative purposes only. Actual product appearance may vary.
Moss is not like other plants. It has no root system. Instead, moss absorbs water and nutrients entirely through its leaves and stems — a process called foliar absorption. This fundamental biological difference means that conventional fertilizers, designed for root-fed plants, are not optimized for moss.
High-concentration NPK fertilizers can stress moss cells and suppress growth. General-purpose micronutrient blends do not account for the specific ratios moss requires. Most fertilizers available on the market were not developed or tested on bryophyte species.
MoNS was developed through bryophyte-specific research. It contains ammonium-form nitrogen — the nitrogen form more efficiently absorbed by moss leaf tissue — alongside phosphorus and potassium in ratios calibrated to support moss physiology. In laboratory trials, moss cultivated with MoNS showed measurably greater growth and biomass density compared to rainwater controls.
| Feature | General-Purpose Fertilizer | MoNS |
|---|---|---|
| Formulated for moss | Not specifically formulated for moss | Developed specifically for moss cultivation |
| Nitrogen form | Primarily nitrate-form nitrogen | Ammonium + nitrate combination (NPK 9-10-28) |
| Application risk | Risk of leaf burn at standard doses | Low-salt formulation; no leaf burn observed at recommended application rate in trials |
| Moss property impact | Potential pH disruption | No statistically significant change in moss pH or water absorption capacity observed in lab trials |
| Third-party lab tested | Not validated for bryophytes | Composition verified: ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory (Mertcontrol HL-LAB, Hungary, 2025) |
| Heavy metals | Variable | All regulated heavy metals below detection limits (As, Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr) |
"Regular fertilizers" refer to general-purpose fertilizers for common plants, which are not specifically formulated or tested for moss cultivation.
Laboratory and Field Trial Data: MoNS Performance Summary
The following data reflects results from controlled laboratory trials and field tests conducted in South Korea. All figures represent comparisons against the best-performing control group tested, which included rainwater and distilled water. Results are presented as observed trial outcomes and do not constitute a guarantee of identical performance under all growing conditions.
In a controlled 30-day laboratory trial, moss cultivated with MoNS showed up to a 30% higher growth rate compared to moss grown with pure water or rainwater under the same conditions resulting in a shorter time to harvest-ready stage.
Species: Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid. | Duration: 30 days | Control: rainwater
In a 30-day laboratory trial, sphagnum moss treated with MoNS showed an approximately 75% increase in length and an approximately 12× increase in branch formation compared to moss grown with rainwater under the same conditions.
Duration: 30 days | Control: rainwater | Lab-controlled conditions
Based on dry weight, fresh weight, and frond length, MoNS-cultivated moss showed a 1.5–2.2× higher composite health index compared to rainwater controls in laboratory trials. Visibly denser growth structure was observed.
Metrics: dry weight, fresh weight, frond length | Lab-controlled conditions
In laboratory stress tests at humidity levels at or below 30%, MoNS-treated moss retained visible moisture and structural integrity for over 48 hours. Control specimens showed visible dehydration stress within the same period.
Species: Racomitrium canescens (Hedw.) Brid. | Humidity: ≤30% | Lab conditions
How to Apply MoNS: Recommended Application Method
MoNS is a water-soluble powder fertilizer designed for foliar application. It is compatible with standard misting and drip irrigation equipment. No equipment modification is required.
Standard Application Procedure
Dissolve 1 g (0.04 ounce) of fertilizer in 1 L (0.26 gallon) of water. Use warm water for faster dissolution.
Stir or shake until completely dissolved. No undissolved particles should remain.
Spray evenly on leaf surfaces. Use approximately 500 mL (16–18 fl oz) of diluted solution per 30 × 60 cm (12 × 24 in) moss tray.
Repeat every week during the growing season.
Coverage: Approximately 360 m² (approx. 3,875 sq ft) per kilogram of product under standard application conditions.
Quick Reference Guide
Moss Application Areas
① For Industrial Moss Growers
Moss and Sphagnum moss cultivation typically involves long regeneration cycles.
MoNS (Moss Nutrient Fertilizer for cultivation) has been evaluated under controlled conditions, where trial observations showed improved growth performance and increased harvest density in both moss and sphagnum moss.
For industrial moss growers, these results translate to the following operational benefits:
- Shorter time to reach harvest-ready condition, enabling earlier and more frequent harvesting
- Denser growth for higher usable yield from the same growing area
- Greater resilience to short-term moisture fluctuations, supporting more manageable cultivation conditions
Field test results reflect observed outcomes under specific test conditions and do not constitute a guarantee of identical performance in all cultivation environments.
② For Landscapers, Indoor and Outdoor Greenery Installers, and Terrarium Designers
MoNS (Moss Nutrient Fertilizer) is suitable for indoor and decorative moss applications, including terrariums, green walls, rooftop greening, building facades, indoor green installations, public landscape projects, and ecological design applications. It can be applied in virtually any project where live moss is used for visual, environmental, or architectural purposes.
MoNS is easy to apply on-site, requires no complex equipment, and is compatible with standard misting and spraying methods.
These features provide the following practical benefits:
- Faster establishment and short-term drought tolerance, supporting stable moss coverage after installation
- Denser moss growth, improving surface coverage and overall visual quality
- Greater tolerance to moisture fluctuations, reducing the need for frequent adjustment and maintenance
MoNS supports moss under standard cultivation conditions and does not replace basic maintenance. It is not effective under extreme conditions where moss cannot survive, or for use on preserved moss.

Moss Property Integrity
In laboratory trials conducted at the recommended application rate, no statistically significant change in moss pH or water absorption capacity was observed following MoNS application. No detectable residue was identified on moss tissue after application under the tested conditions.
These results reflect specific laboratory trial conditions at the recommended application rate of 1 g per 1 liter of water. Results may vary at higher concentrations or under different environmental conditions.
